This trip is designed to provide a full experience of the diversity and richness of Israel, in its geography, its food, its languages, its religions, and even its conflicts. The itinerary was prepared having in mind those who will visit Israel for the first time – including major tourist destinations; and also those who have visited before – but now will also go to off-the-beaten-path places and have unique experiences. We hope this will be a wonderful experience to connect us with the Israel of our dreams and with the Israel of reality. We will encounter its amazing history, its real conflicts, and its beauty and dynamism. As we develop our bonds with our fellow travelers, we will also grow in our understanding of this amazing country, in ways which are not possible without the encounters and visits we will experience together.

This will be the third Beth Shalom group visiting Israel with Rabbi Edery. Our past trips provided valuable experiences and new perspectives that were previously inaccessible to us. As a famous Israeli song says, “Things you can see from there, you cannot see them here.” I am excitedly looking forward to sharing unique and meaningful moments together in Israel with our group this coming Winter.

About Your Group Leader

Rabbi Ariel Edery

Rabbi Ariel Edery will join our tour-guides to further enrich our visit, drawing from his Rabbinic knowledge, but especially drawing from his personal and deep experiences having lived there for years, and being intimately connected to Israel.

Rabbi Edery up in Argentina, in a family that was very involved in Jewish life. His father was a rabbi, mother was a Jewish educator,  my siblings were engaged in the Jewish community and Zionist youth organizations. He was active in his congregation, went daily to a supplemental religious school after public school, often led services, was part of a youth group, and worked in the congregation as a madrich for younger children.

Both of Rabbi Edery’s siblings made Aliyah – choosing to live in Israel once they reached college age. After high school, Rabbi also moved to Israel and studied at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He lived, studied, and worked there for seven years, during which he obtained a BA in International Relations and a BA in General Studies in Humanities. He was active in human rights organizations, worked for a government agency, and got to know the country, its people, and its culture very intimately.

Eventually Rabbi Edery’s life path led to other places, and to North Carolina. But he has remained connected to Israel through many close family relations, friends, and a deep love and concern for “our” one and only Jewish country. He continues to visit there often, and stays informed daily through the Israeli media and different organizations.

All the trips we take are educational and geared towards cultural immersion, and that’s true of MEJDI. But none are so first hand and intentionally personal as the MEJDI tour guides are.

You come away hopeful because the tour guides can have such different backgrounds and experiences and opinions and still respect each other, And, they introduce you to groups that are working to spread that throughout the world.
